Biofilm Monitoring (9781843394372)

The proper control of an attached biomass process depends greatly on the information that can be obtained about the biofilm itself. There are a variety of monitoring systems that indicate biofilm location, extent, composition, etc. In biofilm reactors for water and wastewater treatment such information helps to stabilize and optimize processes. When applying anti-fouling and anti-biocorrosion strategies in industrial or drinking water systems, monitoring gives early warning of problems thus minimizing remedial work and allows for an efficient control of cleaning procedures. The Biofilm Monitoring conference was the first at which the current state-of-the-art in biofilm monitoring could be presented and critically discussed. From around 100 contributions 35 papers have been selected for these proceedings, following a rigorous peer-review procedure. The majority of papers concern techniques to monitor directly the development of the biofilm or to study its composition using modern molecular biology tools. The issue contains also up-to-date papers on the monitoring of biofilm reactors and of the toxics effects in biofilms in industrial and drinking water processes. These proceedings will interest practitioners, engineers, chemists and biologists and provide an excellent summary of advanced methodologies for the understanding of biofilms and biofilm technologies.
